Hiding the shower drain seemed to be of great interest at the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS) in Las Vegas this year. In fact, one of the drains won the Best of KBIS Bath Silver Award!
Most of us have seen the linear drains that run all the way across the shower floor and is either covered with a decorative grate or camouflaged with the same tile as the shower floor. These drains can make a beautiful application in a shower as shown in the two pictures below from the Infinitydrain.com site.
But the winner of the show took a different approach to the linear drain. Drains Unlimited put the drain in the side wall! See it in the featured picture, you can hardly notice the drain. In fact the picture had to be taken at a low angle to actually show the drain at all. Yes it is accessible and cleanable as shown in the next photo from drains-unlimited.com.
Both the linear floor drain and the linear wall drain can help create a curbless or low curb shower. The tile floor is sloped at one angle toward the drain, none of this sloping all around to get to the center drain. The linear floor drain can even be used in a retrofit situation where a low curb is desired. In that case the drain is installed wall-to-wall at the entrance and the shower pan is sloped up from there toward the opposite wall.
